Prasugrel 10mg Tablet is a medication used with aspirin by patients suffering from heart disease (recent heart attack, unstable angina) and undergoes a certain heart procedure known as angioplasty. This medication also helps prevent other serious heart/blood vessel problems (such as strokes, heart attacks, blood clots in stents). Prasugrel 10mg Tablet works by inhibiting platelets from sticking together and preventing the formation of harmful blood clots. This “anti-platelet” effect enables smooth blood flow in the body.
Before using this tablet, read the medication guide and patient information leaflet if provided by your pharmacist before you start taking prasugrel. Or in case, if the patient is having any doubts regarding the usage, should ask the doctor or pharmacist.
Mechanism of Action
Prasugrel is a prodrug that is converted in the liver to its active metabolite.
It selectively and irreversibly binds to the P2Y12 receptor on platelets, preventing ADP-mediated platelet activation and aggregation.
This action reduces thrombus formation within arteries, especially after stent placement, improving blood flow and minimizing the risk of cardiovascular events.
Its irreversible inhibition provides a sustained antiplatelet effect for the lifespan of the affected platelets (7–10 days).
Indications for Use
Prasugrel 10 mg Tablet is primarily prescribed for:
Prevention of thrombotic events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing PCI
Reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke in high-risk cardiovascular patients
Combination therapy with aspirin for dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) following stent placement
Management of patients with a history of arterial thrombosis or unstable angina
Dosage and Administration
Recommended dose: 10 mg once daily for adult patients, unless otherwise directed by a physician.
Tablets should be swallowed whole with water; not to be chewed or crushed.
Typically prescribed in combination with low-dose aspirin to maximize antiplatelet effects.
Dosage may be adjusted based on patient weight, age, and bleeding risk.
Regular monitoring of blood counts and bleeding tendencies is advised during therapy.
Possible Side Effects
While effective, Prasugrel may cause some side effects, including:
